Project Profile

Russell Music Centre Peter Symonds College

Scott White and Hookins helped deliver a sustainable music education facility as a sixth form college in Hampshire that achieved and an Excellent BREEAM rating through strong performance in flood mitigation, water efficiency, and occupant wellbeing.

Intended to provide improved facilities for music and music technology education, this sixth form college project, in Hampshire, also had ambitious sustainability targets. Scott White and Hookins were appointed as BREEAM Assessor and BREEAM AP (design and site) to showcase the holistic opportunities for embedding sustainability within the scheme's design. We also helped the team identify the most feasible route to achieving the team's target of an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating.

The development performed particularly well at minimising surface flooding. By optimising the surface water drainage strategy to maximise infiltration, the drainage strategy was designed to prevent the need for floodwater to be directed to existing sewer and drainage infrastructure under strain.

The strategy to minimise water consumption was also very effective. By specifying highly efficient sanitary fittings, the scheme improved upon the BREEAM water consumption benchmark by 45%.

The design team prioritised the health and wellbeing of the staff and students to make the building an enjoyable and comfortable place of learning. As an example, the building was successfully designed and constructed in line with the best practice acoustic standard for education buildings, BB93.

Target rating - Excellent

Final rating - Excellent
