Opening Ceremony Commonwealth Games 2022
Scott White and Hookins undertook modelling and assessment of the load capacity of the structures supplied by Total Solutions for the opening ceremony of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The project comprised of a 4 storey tiered aluminium framed hydraulically operated structure as the centrepiece
for the opening ceremony. The project was divided into zones including, Tow Path, Bridge(s), Protocol Stage,
Performance level stairs, 3no. tiers and ‘Stella’s house! In addition to these elements, structural checks were also
undertaken for the Bull Ring, Bull Ring Ramp and Bridge.
The complete structure was designed, installed and tested within 4 months. The tiers were designed to move at a speed of up to 200mm/s, occurring multiple times during the performance.
