This project involved a £17 million major refurbishment, recladding and extension of an eleven-storey University of London building.
SWH were the appointed BREEAM Assessors, from feasibility stage through to post construction final certification, on the impressive School of Mathematical Sciences refurbishment project for Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
Working closely with the Client and project team throughout, SWH identified and monitored credits options to ensure those offering greatest benefit and value to the scheme were taken forward within the very high “Excellent” rating that was achieved.
Careful planning and review of the existing structure allowed the building to be refurbished and, where viable and efficient, elements of its M&E plant maintained. This avoided the additional waste and new materials of a demolition and new construction approach.
The project was shortlisted for the prestigious BREEAM Awards, in 2021, in recognition of its fantastic sustainability credentials-with high scoring achieved across all BREEAM categories.
Redeveloping a poorly performing high rise building, on a tight site, with tight financial constraints, created substantial challenges.
Doing so, via a refurbishment that successfully achieved both the Clients ambitious objectives and such a high BREEAM Excellent rating, sets a standard to be aspired to by other schemes.
