Lady Zia Wernher SEND School Luton
SWH helped to support delivery of refurbished and extended specialist teaching spaces, including new classrooms, hydrotherapy facilities, and improved outdoor and drainage infrastructure for this SEND school project.
The £6.5 million SEN school project was delivered in two distinct phase.
Phase 1 focused primarily on the refurbishment of the existing Leagrave Centre conference building, transforming it to accommodate new SEN classrooms and associated facilities within the existing structure.
Phase 2 mainly comprised the construction of two single-storey extensions to provide additional classroom accommodation and specialist teaching spaces. These extensions were formed using a steel frame superstructure supported on traditional foundations. Within the North Block, two reinforced concrete undercroft areas were created to house a hydrotherapy pool and a sunken trampoline, providing enhanced specialist provision for pupils.
The external works included the construction of a new staff car park and the resurfacing of playground areas to form a dedicated specialist outdoor space for children. To complement the natural slope of the site, an innovative sub-base storage and weir SuDS solution was incorporated beneath the playground areas, restricting surface water runoff, and achieving 60% improvement over the existing site conditions.
