European Space Agency Harwell Conference Centre
SWH were appointed as BREEAM Assessors and AP throughout the design and construction of the new Harwell Conference Centre for the European Space Agency.
The Conference Centre contains a large conference auditorium, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, café' and supporting ancillary services.
In our role as BREEAM Assessors and AP, we worked with the design team to identify the most valuable sustainability measures to be implemented in order to successfully reach their target of an Excellent BREEAM rating. The development scored particularly well for its pollution prevention measures, for example by installing low impact refrigerant systems and fully electric heating systems.
Also impressive is the building's energy performance. By incorporating passive design measures to reduce the building's energy demand and implementing renewable energy technologies, the building has exceeded BREEAM's 'outstanding' energy performance levels.
The project also considered embodied carbon throughout the design process, to allow the team to identify and consolidate the building's most carbon intensive components.
Target rating - Excellent
Final rating - Excellent
