And the award goes to…. Southampton Solent University’s ‘The Spark’
Scott White and Hookins attended the Education Estates Awards Dinner on 1st November, where Southampton Solent University’s ‘The Spark’ building won the Student Experience Award and was Highly Commended in the Project of the Year: Colleges and Universities category!
SWH were the Civil/Structural Engineering Consultant and also provided Traffic and Transport Consultancy and we were delighted to be invited by Scott Brownrigg Architects to join their table for the evening along with the senior management team from the University, Main Contractor and FF&E Designer/Supplier. SWH were appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers for this new academic teaching facility on the University main campus site. The Spark is a seven storey reinforced concrete framed building providing state of the art flexible teaching spaces, lecture theatres, conferencing facilities and includes a feature atrium with large multi-purpose circulation space.
The atrium houses a ‘Pod’ structure (The Spark) containing an eighty seat lecture theatre with a flexible social space on top. The structural engineering of the Pod was completed by SWH and incorporates many unique and ground breaking engineering concepts and principles.
The Pod is the first and only example of a structure of this type in existence seamlessly blending maritime ship building technology to sophisticated structural engineering practices. The Pod is raised up on 14m high slender steel columns and its shell is formed out of 10mm thick plate steel. It creates an iconic centre piece to the Universities campus.
