Louise Hamilton Palliative Care Centre – Multi Award Winner
We are delighted to have been involved with this Palliative care project which has received ‘Highly Commended’ at the Better Healthcare awards 2013 and won the CIAT Open Award for Technical Excellence 2013.
This is a new ‘landmark’ family-centred environment building to accommodate a range of care services, providing its users with practical, psychological and clinical advice and help.
The structural challenge has been the design of ‘free-form’ double curvature shell. The concept takes a sea-side context and the notion of ‘ark’ as a place of refuge to wrap together the internal and external spaces that represent the social heart of the building. The conceptual structural model is illustrated.
The CIAT Open Award for Technical Excellence demonstrated creative and imaginative use of traditional technology; collaborative working; responsible design; the design process, etc. very much a team success. The award specifically picked up on the whole process and involvement from everyone from the design team, from user consultation to structures, to M&E, and contractor and supply chain engagement.
The building was opened in April 2013 by HRH the Princess Royal.
