Bedford Office - Celebrating 40 Years
On Wednesday 16th May, the Partners and Staff of our Bedford Office hosted a reception at Wrest Park, Silsoe to celebrate our 40th anniversary in Bedfordshire.
The event was attended by over 70 Clients who enjoyed tours of the recently restored Italian and Rose Gardens, as well as the ground floor of the house.
Scott White and Hookins was originally established in 1963 in Mitcham, Surrey by Ray Scott-White and Barrie Hookins. Our presence in Bedfordshire started in 1971 when Peter Blackmore was asked to move to the area and take charge when we sub let an office in Ampthill from Thompson and Chipperfield Architects. We were delighted that Peter Blackmore and his wife Kathy were able to join us at the celebration.
After a couple of years we had 3 members of staff and moved to Charter House, on Bromham Road in Bedford, as sub-tenants of Charter Partnership. By 1975 we had grown to 7 people, and we agreed to move again with Charter Partnership to St. Mary’s House, at Cardington Road in Bedford. In 1987 we purchased our current office at Fountain House, 26. St. John’s Street, Bedford, and by the end of the 80’s we had 25 staff shared between the two offices. The recession of the early 90’s hit us hard and we halved in size in between 1991 and 93. We vacated St. Mary’s House and consolidated all staff into Fountain House. With the new millennium came a new optimism and a period of steady growth. Following the credit crunch in 2008 we re-structured our business to put us on a firm footing, and give us optimism for the future.
The venue, Wrest Park was chosen to celebrate our 40th Anniversary as Scott White and Hookins were the structural and civil engineers for the new Visitors Centre & Car Park as well as the Greater Gardens Footpath Restoration projects, and the reinstatement of the historic pathways.
We would like to give a special thank you to English Heritage for allowing us to use this very special venue for our 40th celebration and to the staff at Wrest Park for helping make the evening possible.
