Winchester Office - Celebrating 30 years
Monday 12th December 2011, the Partners and Staff of our Winchester Office hosted a reception at Kings Community Church just outside Southampton, to celebrate our 30th anniversary in Winchester.
The event was attended by over 70 Clients who enjoyed mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas cake!
Scott White and Hookins was originally established in 1963 in Mitcham, Surrey by Ray Scott-White and Barrie Hookins. The Bedford Office was started in 1972 and then in 1981 the Winchester Office was opened by Graham Wilkins, who had accepted the invitation to be Partner that year, and a young Gordon Lockhart (currently our Managing Partner). The initial Winchester Office was based in Anglo-City House in Southgate Street.
We were delighted that Graham Wilkins and his wife Diana were able to join us at the celebration.
One of the first projects in the office was the refurbishment of the Natwest Bank in Romsey, which lead to many projects in the early days putting in cash dispensers within branches.
Starting the office you always say yes, and Gordon recounts…“he had a call from a potential new Client, a Solicitor in London saying he would send him a report via fax later in the day. The report was of building he wanted him to look at. Gordon of course said that he would be delighted to assist him and looked forward to receiving the document via the new technology that was fax at that time. Putting down the phone, he then set about searching Winchester in an attempt to buy a fax machine in time to receive the document. He ended up approaching another friendly business in Winchester who kindly agreed to accept the fax on our behalf”. - Always innovative!!
In 1988, Gordon accepted the invitation to become a Partner alongside Graham, running the office in Winchester. Also that year, the office moved to its current location in Harman House, Andover Road.
Richard Hemming, who became Partner at Winchester in 2008 told the gathered guests that “Our workload moving into 2012 looks the strongest it has for a number of years, with a strong mix of Clients in both the Public and Private sectors.
We are embracing technologies and we are using REVIT structure on most projects, which provides both the visibility on the projects and the coordination when working with our construction colleagues.
Our focus is to continue to deliver a fully integrated, high quality service to our clients in a friendly, professional manner and to reflect our passion for innovative and sustainable construction through well trained and motivated staff”.
The venue, Kings Community Church was chosen to celebrate our 30th Anniversary as Scott White and Hookins were involved in the design of the facility, providing a new 1300 seat auditorium with ancillary facilities including dedicated youth and crèche rooms, with a major new office space for the work of the church.
