Scott White and Hookins Goes Overseas
The Transport Team have been enjoying their first experience of working overseas, all the way across the water in the Isle of Wight! We have been appointed to assist the Isle of Wight Council as they reorganise the education system on the island from a three-tier to a two tier system. The reorganisation will see some schools close, some undergo expansion and some brand new build schemes.
Our role combines undertaking Transport Assessments and Travel Planning with Highway Design work. We have assessed the impact the programme will have on traffic flows and road safety at various existing and proposed school sites. Where there are potential problems we have identified highway and on-site improvement measures and are producing designs to address the issues. So far we have produced a range of schemes including junction improvements, pedestrian crossings, traffic calming and highway realignments.
As always we are keen to promote sustainable transport and we have looked at the school travel plans to see how changes in attitudes, behaviour and management procedures can be made to address some of the potential transport impacts. We consider this is a vital part of our work as school children can be taught to make sustainable travel choices which will hopefully influence them throughout their lives.
